3 Major Causes Of Depression

Negative self-talk, not doing what you want to do and being disconnected are 3 major causes of depression.

The chatter in your mind doesn’t stay in your mind. Telling yourself that you’re stupid, ugly or you don’t deserve to be happy will spill out into your life in numerous ways. If you are doing this daily then you are programming yourself to believe your self-talk.

Imagine for a moment that the harsh voice in your head is a person, someone you live with. What would you do if they spoke to you in a critical and hurtful way every day? You’d look for somewhere else to live and remove them from your life, right?

That’s straightforward enough but we’re talking about your mind which of course you can’t get away from. Is it any wonder then that you feel depressed having to listen to that old nag all the time?

Reality check: You don’t have to listen. Well, you do until you make a choice to do something about it.

That harsh, critical, hurtful and mean negative voice can be turned into a supportive, non-judgmental, kind and motivating voice.

When you do flip your inner talk from negative to positive, guess what happens? You feel happier and enjoy life.

The depression disappears.

Unless that is, you are not doing what you really want to do….

Not Doing What You Want Leads To Depression

Following your heart’s desire or passion in life is a common thing people say but it’s easier said than done. Usually, it’s down to two things, not knowing what you want or money.

A lot of people are working jobs that they don’t like and that have nothing to do with what they enjoy doing. Some of those people have side hustles or hobbies so that they still get to do what they love.

However, if you are doing work that is sucking the life out of you, coming home tired and watching TV until bed – and you do the same all over again the next day, and the next and the next…Being on that hamster wheel will make you feel depressed.

Knowing what you enjoy or a profession you’d like to do is a start, but you may have to get creative in how you go about that.

Not knowing what you want or what you enjoy? You’ve got to start trying stuff out. Whether it’s drawing, dancing, bowling, spelunking, ice skating, soap carving, or Dorodango. Yeah, that last thing is a real thing – look it up – it’s a Japanese art form.

My point is, there’s a big wide world out there with a heck of a lot of stuff to do. Cheap, expensive and a lot in-between.

Who knows, not only may you find something really great to do but you could make new friends too.

Which leads me to the third major cause of depression, being disconnected from people.

Being Disconnected Leads To Depression

Contact with other people is something most people want and like. The amount of contact will depend on the individual, some are social butterflies and some are not.

It’s no surprise that people are having less and less contact. The internet and social media allow us to create a lifestyle where we communicate and connect on a virtual level.

Face to face contact with real people and having your own support network or tribe is important. Without this you become disconnected and depression can set in.

What to do now?

The Best Way To Treat Depression Naturally

Two important notes: this article and website is NOT medical advice – it is for educational and informational purposes only. Secondly, if you are on any medication speak to your health care provider before trying something different or new; and also if you have or have had mental health issues.

With all that said, what is the best way to treat depression naturally? Depression due to being disconnected can be addressed by reconnecting with others. However, difficulties connecting with others, negative self-talk, and not following your heart’s desire can all be treated by YOU when you commit to working on your state of mind.

How do you do that?

There are three ways to work on your mind so that you can change it to benefit you in positive ways:

  1. Self-Hypnosis
  2. Hypnotherapy
  3. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

Let’s look at these in more detail.

Tools & Resources For Depression

Self-hypnosis works by getting into a deeply relaxed state so that your mind is receptive to receiving and holding new information, for example, positive affirmations and beneficial statements.

Over time repeating this process yourself will gradually start to change your old negative thought and beliefs to new positive thoughts and beliefs. This will be reflected in your life and your depression will start to lift.

Hypnotherapy works the same way as self-hypnosis but instead of doing this yourself, you have a therapist take you through the process.

3.CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

CBT is widely used in the treatment of mental health issues and is known as a “talking therapy”.

CBT works towards changing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are causing problems in someone’s life.  Different techniques are used to identify patterns and learn ways to facilitate change.  You work with a trained CBT therapist.

The Mind & Depression

How you speak to yourself in your mind every day will have a BIG effect on your life.  From the words you use to the choices you make, resulting in an experience that is either enjoyable or not.   As I write that last sentence I’m reminded of a quote from Gandhi:

“Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.”

Mahatma Gandhi
