No, I haven’t built a time machine but I have been known to time travel. Okay, so now you’re thinking – what did she just say? I’m saying that when your mind wanders to past events or you project yourself into the future then basically you are time-traveling IN YOUR MIND. Therefore, time travel is real – this is why.
READING TIME: 7 Mins. Or JUMP AND SKIM:
Let me tell you a secret, I’ve been a little fascinated with time for a while. My favorite movie genre is time travel. The comedy movie About Time is about a young guy who discovers that he and the males in his family can travel back in time. Not only is it a feel-good movie but it also has some great quotes. I decided to use some of what the characters say in this post as they either support or explain what I want to write about, which is essentially – to stop time traveling in your mind and stay in the present.
The Good Old Days Or The Bad Old Days?
I need to be really clear here when I say to not live in the past, move on and forget about it. Yes, it is beneficial to learn from the past BUT it is important to not stay in the past.
As soon as you start to think about the past it takes you away from your present moment. The longer you stay in that past event the longer you are not in the present.
There are two reasons why people think about the past – either to remember the good old days and get nostalgic or remember something unpleasant that happened. Neither is adding joy to your day. Going over unpleasant experiences will obviously bring you down and make you feel sad but even the fun times will create a melancholy longing.
There are two things worth mentioning here that are attached to the past -labeling and your story.
When you think of past events and situations as the good times and the bad times, you are labeling them.
Don’t get me wrong, we all do it but the point is that sometimes we are way too quick to judge them without really knowing. I have done it many times, only to realize that actually, the thing that happened that devastated me (and I labeled it “bad”) was in fact the best thing that ever happened to me.
Not any more.
Now I try to remain neutral about my experiences and see them as just that – experiences. Neither good nor bad. I no longer waste time and energy on thinking about things that are not happening now.
Whatever you do – please let go of “your story” in your mind – the one that is trapping you and is limiting you now. Seriously, your past does not define your future and who you are now. I am a completely different person to the one that I was 20 years ago, heck, even a year ago. I refuse to hold on to old programming and things like…I am shy or I can’t do that because or this because…blah, blah, blah.
In the movie About Time Tim realizes the futility of going back:
“The truth is, I now don’t travel back at all. Not even for the day. I just try to live every day as if I’ve deliberately come back to this one day to enjoy it as if it was the full final day of my extraordinary, ordinary life”Tim (About Time)
The past is not happening now and neither is the future.
The Future Is Not Guaranteed
Practicing living in the now and bringing my mind back to the present was easier when I traveled to the past. I had more of a problem with the future. Even now, I have to be really vigilant to keep my mind from projecting me into future events that I want to experience.
For me, the future is a slippery customer. I try and keep it in my now but sometimes it can slip away. I think that is because we are so programmed to have goals and strive for certain things. I mean, what’s up with that “you got to have a 5-year plan”? Who says? Not me – Forget about it!
It can be tricky when we have desires and want to make changes. Dreaming of your new life and all the things you want to achieve can throw you into the future in a blink of an eye if you are not careful. Making plans and goals into the future will also trap you and take you out of your now.
So, how do you manage all that? Like this:
- The new things that you want to experience and bring into your reality must be visualized as happening NOW. Not tomorrow or in 6 months’ time.
- Make plans or have goals for the day that you are in ONLY.
- The things you want to achieve will get materialize as you make the steps day by day.
- What about those appointments and important dates? Dentist, window cleaner, flights, etc. Get a calendar and add them in your present-day and, do not let your mind go to that future appointment.
Stopping yourself from living in the future can be done, you just need to be watchful of where your mind goes.
Keep on day-dreaming about the life you want to create. But when you do imagine it happening now because the future is not guaranteed.
There’s a song by Baz Luhrmann called Sunscreen. He says worrying about the future is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life will always be things that never crossed your worried mind.Tim (About Time)
Life is happening now, (not in the past and not in the future) so make the most of it – right now.
8 Beneficial Reasons To Stay In The Present
The 8 common desires that most people have:
ALL of these things can be yours if you stop time traveling in your mind and start living in the now.
Oh! I missed number 8 – Money.
The thing is, once you start living in the present the money issue sorts itself out naturally. Part of living in the now means you will begin to start to know yourself and why you do what you do – in everything, including your relationship with money and the decisions you make around it. Clarity of mind comes when living in the present and it will assist you in making all the changes you want to make to move forward and create the life you want.
This is why disciplining your mind is SO IMPORTANT. It’s not some airy-fairy, notion -no – it is about controlling your mind, and your inner state so that you can make beneficial choices.
Living in the now WILL touch all areas of your life in a beneficial and the best way to do this is by practicing mindfulness.
“We’re all traveling through time together, every day of our lives. All we can do is do our best to relish this remarkable ride.”Tim (About Time)
Secret Formula For Happiness
Going back to number 1 – Happiness – there is a perfect clip from the movie About Time that shows us the secret formula for happiness. When you forget about your worries and stresses (which you get when in the past or future) and live in the now moment – you notice how sweet life can be.
Give it a go, you will be happy you did.
How Do You Stop Time Traveling?
One word – Mindfulness.
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your awareness (attention) to the present moment each time it wanders away.
As it says on the front page of my blog – If I Could Give Only One Piece Of Advice To My Younger Self It Would Be This: Practice Mindfulness.
Remember – the future does not exist and you cannot go back to those past times – that was then and this is NOW.
Real joy and happiness is found in that now.
I would say that out of all the self-development books, videos, and courses that have helped me, none of them have come close to this profound knowledge. It is not until you dedicate yourself to living in the now do you fully understand the full wonderful and amazing effect it has on your life.
Grab life by the horns and fully immerse yourself in your day and your life will never be the same again. Time traveling is not required!
“Live life as if there were no second chances.”Tim (About Time)
